How to Read a Nutrition Label

When looking at a nutrition label posted on a food container there are a few things to pay attention to. For reference, this post will dive into the nutrition facts for Momentous’ Essential 100% Plant-Based Protein Piedmont Chocolate.

  1. Serving size. Serving size is the amount that one should eat in one sitting. This amount may come in different measurements such as cups, grams, or ounces. For this Momentous protein, one serving size is one scoop of protein powder.

  2. Servings per container. In one tub of protein powder from Momentous, there are 24 servings. This means that there are 24 scoops; if one scoop is consumed every day, one tub will last 24 days.

  3. Calories per serving. Calories per serving are the about of calories in one serving (scoop). Each scoop of Essential- Piedmont Chocolate is 100 calories.

  4. Nutrients and % of the daily value. This is where you will find the amount of fat, protein, and carbohydrates as well micronutrients in that specific food labeled. It is important to look at the carbohydrate and protein levels to make sure you are obtaining the correct amount and type of nutrients to enhance performance. (generally speaking 5% or less of the daily value is low and 20% or more is high)
